For the second time Bellerby’s has delivered a beautiful interpretation of my rambling thoughts and produced above all, two objects that trigger memories of real events, most with an element of humour, (sometimes dark) and both that combine to present the legacy that I imagined.
To you Peter, my thanks for your hospitality when I visited with my sister and for overcoming so many insurmountable obstacles to bring your unique business into being.

An excellent Easter surprise! I was finally able to receive the globe at Easter. Very exciting indeed. I wonder what it looks like? Will I like it? Despite Brexit, your shipping via FedEx to Berlin was incredibly fast and completely unproblematic as far as customs clearance was concerned. Now the exciting moment had arrived and I was able to take the globe out of a beautifully constructed transport box. It looks fascinating and I’m always discovering new things. I had decided in favour of ‘The Albion’ version and now admire not only the precision of all the cartographic details, but also how excellently and accurately the individual animals are painted. I immediately read the book ‘The Globemakers’ with great enthusiasm and can only recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about globes and how they were created.
I would like to briefly tell you once again about my decision-making process that led to me ordering a globe from Bellerby. My friends immediately asked if they had understood correctly that I had ordered a globe. When I then explained to them that I didn’t want an industrial product, but a real globe, they often lacked understanding and imagination. When I first read in Germany about Bellerby & Co in an English magazine, I was fascinated, but at the same time suspicious as to what was actually special about it. I then visited the Bellerby website and could visualise it much better, but somehow still not quite. So, while travelling in London, I looked at Bellerby globes in a shop and then it happened. I was completely blown away by the enormous quality and precision of the workmanship. I had never seen globes like this before. From that moment on, I was sure that I wanted a globe like that. Now it was time to save money and start thinking about what I wanted it to look like. When I ordered it, it was very exciting.
Jade, you and your colleagues gave me great support and excellent advice throughout. You were completely patient when I still had an addition or change. The process went perfectly and I gained complete confidence in your processes in a very short time. My globe is proof of this perfection. It is also more than just a cartographic representation of the earth, it is a complete work of art and of course it is unique.

“The globe and base were perfect. All the stress of FedEx International was quickly forgotten. It made us sad to put the globe and base back in their lovely containers, but safety first—the house we bought needs a great deal more work than we had realized so they will remain safely crated until the construction workers depart. We have designed a library around her (she seems like a her, but I might be biased, having only dealt with you two on the project, plus she is just so fashionable!).
We will be visiting the site with our architect middle August and can hardly wait for him to see her as well (and that will give us more time to study the detail—oh the detail!) Your artistry is extraordinary. This will surely be the most memorable gift D- and I will give each other for our anniversary. Given the amount of work involved in the new house, we are hoping to get Ms Globe up and running for our next anniversary (New Year’s Eve) but fear it will be more likely summer solstice. At this meeting I mentioned I was looking for something “in – between” the two sizes; 65 cm. (Which if I remember correctly this size, at the time, was not being created.) You mentioned that there were other patrons who had also expressed a similar sizing and you would look into the specifications required to make the middle-size globe a reality.
Later in the year of 2018, you contacted me to make accommodations for the creation of a medium-sized floor globe. Once again, I gave you another challenge; I asked for fluted legs for my medium-sized globe. And once again, you met my challenge head-on. The attention to detail, the artistry, and the obvious passion is evident and nothing short of extraordinary.
Recently, I finished your book, “The Globemakers: The Curious Story of an Ancient Craft.” The opportunity to delve into the world of globemaking through your words; reading about your journey, through the search for a special globe for your father’s 80th birthday, to the founding of your company solidified for me your unique perspective; all while learning the deep and rich history behind this ancient craft was a truly inspirational journey for me as well.
With this in mind, I now have your book resting upon the very timeless piece of art you and your team of incredible artists personally crafted on my behalf. I am immensely grateful. There is not a day that I do not find myself glancing over the mastery that graces my personal home office.

The globe emerged from the box that same evening – love the engineering that goes into the fastenings and makes it almost a magician’s trunk.
It is beautiful. Such a special thing to have at our fingertips and D- loves the raised reliefs, as do I, it is so tactile and the illustrations are exactly as I hoped. Now that life is a little calmer we will enjoy exploring it and learning the best routes for D- to trace his fingers from the Arctic southwards to Australia and thence Antarctica. It so happens that I visited my sister in October (my first visit to Australia) and we walked around the ‘State Library of Queensland’ and saw a globe in one of their exhibition rooms. The room was locked and, despite asking, we were not allowed in as they were preparing for an upcoming exhibition. I wonder if that was your globe. I will have to go back.

We finally made it back to our Toronto home to unpack our large Globe. WOW! It is a stunning piece of art! We had so much fun last night spinning the globe, looking at places we’ve been, the animals we’ve seen, the fantastic memories we’ve had and contemplating our next adventures (hopefully not too far in the distant future). With all the craziness of the past five months having the globe to ‘spin and travel’ is even more significant.
The desktop globe at our cottage is equally treasured. We love how it spins. Amazing how your artist was able to paint the wildlife.
We have some thoughts and will follow up in the next day. We are thinking of commissioning another Globe! In the meantime please thank all the artists involved. We can imagine how much they love working at Bellerby and giving us clients so much joy!

After a frustrating delay by US Customs, the globe arrived safely this afternoon, and it is superb. I am delighted by how lovely it is to look at, how pleasing it is to touch and spin, how fascinating it is to explore. Every detail of the design – including the personalization you added for me – is flawless.
I cannot imagine a better gift for my husband Jeff to commemorate our fortieth wedding anniversary, and he is as thrilled with it as I. Though we have done a little traveling, I chose the globe not for that reason, but because it so beautifully represents who Jeff is and what he values. He studied geology in college, and he reads widely about cosmology, evolution, climate change, and the intersection of science with mythology and religion. So as you can see … the globe is perfect!

“The long awaited mysterious package finally arrived this afternoon….a heavy white courier box, and inside, a smart black and aluminium carry case like the one’s used by roadies to take equipment. Intrigue is still building…then, to open and see an finely crafted globe, so beautifully painted like a matt watercolour, nestled inside the foam casing: WOW!
I lifted it out (has a very solid weight to it) and placed it on the sleek aluminium base and saw the touching inscription you wrote at the bottom. It glides, in a very pleasing way, on the smooth ball bearings so the world can be placed in whatever orientation you like.
Hands down, the most unique gift we have ever received, and one we will treasure forever. The artisanal nature of this object touches me further, and now, having looked up the company and watched their video, a whole new dimension is revealed to me of the love and passion behind this one man’s quest for excellence in this craft.”
